Opportunities, Not Obstacles

From former college walk-on to five-year NFL running back (and counting), Boston Scott knows the art of perseverance. He explains the key to this art for The Journeyman’s Path. His story is inspiring, and a great example of learning and iterating along your path.

He is the embodiment of the lesson he teaches here.

Many of the lessons I’ve been taught have been from pain and tough times.

I learned who I didn’t want to be.

I learned what I didn’t want to be.

I learned how not to talk to people.

I learned how you shouldn’t manage finances.

I learned how you shouldn’t deal with conflict.

Many people who come across my story and see I was a walk-on who made it to the NFL are encouraged, motivated, and inspired. But this journey was incredibly painful, and many times had me on the brink of surrender. Little did I know, the pain was essential for me not just to be inspired to change my body, but more importantly, to change my perspective.

Once my perspective shifted to viewing obstacles in life as opportunities to grow, I saw my life begin to change.

I could’ve given up having to balance football, injuries, work, and school, but I learned to manage my time effectively.

I could’ve given up when I didn’t have enough money to pay for school, but I learned to rely more on my faith.

I could’ve given up when past relationships with women failed, but I learned how to become a better man through mentors.

I could’ve given up when I didn’t get invited to a senior bowl or the combine, but I learned the importance of intrinsic motivation.

Obstacles are a common facet of life that everyone encounters at some point. It presents challenges, stress, and setbacks that test one’s resilience and determination. Overcoming obstacles requires FAITH, a strong mindset, perseverance, and the willingness to confront difficult situations head-on. It is a transformative process that often leads to personal growth and development.

When faced with obstacles, you have the opportunity to tap into your inner strength, and use it to navigate through tough times. Overcoming obstacles builds character, reinforces perseverance, and instills a sense of accomplishment. It is through facing obstacles that you discover your true capabilities and develop the resilience needed to thrive in the face of future challenges. Ultimately, obstacles shouldn’t be viewed as such, but rather as opportunities to become a better you.

No gimmicks. Just free, quality insights into the spirit of performance and competition.
